Bangkok, 10 March 2026 – Following a field visit by the Department of Internal Trade under the Ministry of Commerce to monitor the onion market situation in Mae Wang District, CP AXTRA Public Company Limited operator of makro and Lotus’s has stepped in to support Thai farmers by purchasing onions at leading market prices and accelerating distribution nationwide. The initiative aligns with government policy to help stabilize market prices and support farmers’ incomes.
In 2026, makro–Lotus’s has committed to purchasing 6,000 tons of onions from Chiang Mai, distributing the produce through its nationwide network of stores to help absorb supply during the peak harvest season. The onions will be packaged in 1-kilogram packs for general consumers and 10-kilogram packs for restaurants and food service businesses, making it easier to reach both household and business customers while expanding market opportunities.
A representative of farmers from Mae Wang District in Chiang Mai said: “The onion market has recently been affected by several factors, including a slowing economy that has reduced demand, leading many wholesalers to reduce inventory. At the same time, imported onions are competing in the market, causing farmgate prices to decline. The collaboration between government agencies and Makro–Lotus’s to support purchases and accelerate distribution is therefore extremely important. It helps open broader market opportunities and significantly mitigates the impact of falling prices on farmers. Local farmers are very grateful to all parties who have stepped in to support and expand marketing channels during this time.”
Chiang Mai is one of Thailand’s key onion-producing regions, accounting for nearly 70% of the country’s total output, with an estimated production of around 25,000 tons. The peak harvest period occurs between February and March, when the largest volumes enter the market. Collaboration between the public and private sectors therefore plays a crucial role in supporting price stability early in the season and strengthening farmers’ confidence.
makro–Lotus’s reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with government agencies and farmer networks nationwide to help balance Thailand’s agricultural supply chain. The company aims to support farmers with stable market channels while continuously delivering quality agricultural products at fair prices to consumers in a sustainable manner.
